Caroline Dowling

Caroline completed her medical training at The University of Melbourne, graduating top student at the Royal Melbourne Hospital Clinical School in 1994.

After completing basic surgical training at the Royal Melbourne Hospital she was accepted into the Victorian Urology training program and completed this in 2003. During this time she completed a Masters of Surgery (University of Melbourne) with basic science research into biomarkers in prostate cancer.

Following her urology training, she undertook a fellowship year at The Royal Melbourne Hospital with the Neuro-urology and Continence service, developing expertise in urodynamics, clinical assessment and operative and medical management of patients with complex bladder dysfunction and pelvic floor disorders. She has continued this role, now as a Consultant, and works closely in a multidisciplinary team at the Royal Melbourne Hospital, Department of Urology.

After the completion of her fellowship she worked for 5 years exclusively as a Consultant Urologist at The Royal Melbourne Hospital and Southern Health. At this time she commenced as a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Surgery at Monash University and has expertise in the teaching and mentoring of undergraduate and post graduate students.

With a long term interest in Female Pelvic Medicine and Reconstructive Surgery, whilst working at both the Royal Melbourne Hospital and Southern Health Urology departments as a Consultant in Urology, she then completed an additional post fellowship training year in 2009 in the Department of Urogynaecology at Southern Health. This has enabled her to gain greater expertise in the surgical management of incontinence and urogenital prolapse.

She now practices in general urology, incontinence and prolapse based in Toorak and Epworth Eastern, while maintaining her public appointment at Royal Melbourne Hospital. Her role there includes multidisciplinary clinics for the management of pelvic floor disorders in females and neuro-urology with the Geriatrician to the Urology Unit and a liaison service for young adults with complex urological problems with the Royal Childrens’ Hospital. She operates at Cabrini Malvern and Epworth Hawthorn.

She has a career interest in both simple and videourodynamic studies and diagnosis and the surgical management of incontinence and prolapse. She has professional memberships of the Continence Foundation of Australia, the Urological Society of Australia and New Zealand, the American Urological Association (AUA), the International Continence Society, the International Urogynaecology Association (IUGA) and the Society of Urodynamics and female Urology (SUFU).  She has co-authored book chapters and several journal publications.
